JeffStreet Statement of Faith

Preamble to our Statement of Faith

As the head of Jefferson Street Christian Church, Jesus is at the forefront of any decision made by the staff, Elders, and trustees. Every program, all teaching material used, each teacher chosen, each sermon preached, every prayer uttered is built on the foundation that will not contradict any teaching from Jesus. As He promised Jesus sent us the comforter—the Holy Spirit. We seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in every aspect of all church activities and decisions.

Jesus established His Church and preached the Kingdom of God was close. People who are seeking Him are invited and welcome to worship with Christians in the JeffStreet congregation without judging their pre-Christian lifestyle. The focus of JeffStreet is the “Great Commission” regarding seeking out those in the community with the Gospel of Jesus for the purpose of making disciples and teaching the Christian world-view. The expectations of each person who has accepted and yielded to Jesus will be encouraged to live the life that is described in the New Testament regarding lifestyle behaviors.

We are a Christ-centered church, therefore: we are rooted in His Word, leading people to an active faith in Jesus Christ. We are related to Jesus and to each other because of His sacrifice. We are reaching out to the community to share the gospel of Jesus with all who wish to hear.

The following six principles define our Christian beliefs:

God is our Father: He is the Creator of the universe and the lover of all people.
  • God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person is fully God, and there is one God (commonly known as the Trinity).
  • We believe that human life is sacred, and that each person has been granted the God-given right to be treated with respect as an individual created in the image of God. Our duty, as Christians, is to love our neighbor as ourselves regardless of race, gender, creed, nationality, or social status. We oppose all forms of discrimination, prejudice, and violence as incompatible with God’s design. We believe that life from conception to death is a valued gift from God, to be respected and nurtured. As God is the sole giver of life, we believe that the time of death of each human life should also be left in His hands.

  • The institution of marriage is a lifelong union between one man and one woman, under authority of God. Marriage is permanent, exclusive, comprehensive, and conjugal “one flesh”, intrinsically ordered to procreation and biological or adoptive family, and in furtherance of the moral, spiritual, and public good of binding father, mother, and child.

  • All things exist for the glory of God

Jesus is our Lord and Savior: He is the unique Son of God, who was born of a virgin, shed His blood for the sins of the world, was bodily resurrected from the dead, reigns now with God in Heaven, and will one day return.
The Holy Spirit is our Guide: He is the divine Comforter and Counselor sent by God to convict sinners and guide Christians, in whom He dwells. Believers must be open to God’s leading through His Spirit.

  • The Holy Spirit indwells the believer, who is sealed until the day of redemption and empowered to live a godly life.

The Bible is the Word of God: The Bible is inspired by God, and is His unique, full and final authority on all matters of faith and Christian living. The central purpose of Scripture is to call all people into fellowship with God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
  • The Scriptures are inspired by God, are true, authoritative, sufficient, and declare His design and plan for mankind.

    • 1 Thessalonians 2:13

All people need God: All people are sinful and lost without a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Salvation is the result of one believing in Jesus, repenting of sin, confessing Jesus as Lord, being baptized (fully immersed in water) for forgiveness of sin and the gift of the Holy Spirit, and living by faith in the grace of God.
  • Though originally good, Man willingly fell to sin–ushering evil and death, both physical and spiritual, into the world. Because all have sinned, all humanity requires the intervention that Christ provides on the cross.
  • Every person can have restored fellowship with God through salvation (accepting Christ’s offer of forgiveness for sin).

    • John 3:3
    • Romans 10:13-15
    • Ephesians 2:8
    • Titus 2:11
    • Titus 3:5-7
  • Only through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ and repentance from sin can one be reconciled to God and experience true life and joy.
  • And practice two ordinances—(1) Water baptism by immersion, and (2) Holy communion (the Lord’s Supper) as a proclamation of Christ’s suffering and death for our salvation.

    • Mark 16:16
    • Acts 10:47,48

  • We believe that we are justified by God through faith in Jesus. As we submit to the gift of His Holy Spirit, we are sanctified through a life long process.

  • The deserved penalty for sin is physical and spiritual death.
The Church is God’s worldwide family: The Church is comprised of all those who have acknowledged Jesus Christ as Savior and surrendered to Him as Lord. Devotion to Christ and His cause and a yearning for continuous growth in Him are normal for every believer.
  • The Church has a mission to seek and save all who are lost in sin. We believe the Church is the Body of Christ and consists of the people who, throughout time, have accepted God’s offer of redemption (regardless of religious denomination) through the sacrificial death of His Son Jesus Christ.
    • Ephesians 1:18-23
    • Ephesians 2:18-22
    • Hebrews 12:23
  • A divinely called and scripturally ordained leadership ministry serves the Church. The Bible teaches that each of us under Christ’s leadership must commit ourselves to reach others for Him, to worship Him with other believers, to humbly submit to each other and to encourage and edify the body of believers–the Church.
